Swiss retail trade declines 0.2 percent in July

In July 2023, retail trade turnover adjusted for the effect of sales days and holidays decreased in nominal terms by 0.2 percent compared with July 2022.

 

In July 2023, Swiss retail sales figures, adjusted for the effect of sales days and holidays, decreased by 2.2 percent in real terms compared with the same month of the previous year.

The trend in real terms takes into account inflation. Compared with the previous month, seasonally adjusted retail trade turnover figures showed a 2.3 percent decline in real terms.

 

Swiss retail trade, excluding gas stations

After adjusting for the effect of sales days and public holidays, retail trade, excluding gas stations, registered a 0.5 percent increase in sales figures in July 2023 in nominal terms compared to July 2022 (in real terms: -1.8 percent).

Retail trade in food, beverages and tobacco posted a 2.7 percent increase in sales in nominal terms (in real terms: -1.8 percent), the non-food sector a 1.0 percent decrease in nominal terms (in real terms: -1.9 percent).

Excluding seasonal variations, retail trade, excluding gas stations, recorded a 2.2 percent decrease in sales figures in July 2023 in nominal terms compared to June 2023 (in real terms: -2.4 percent).

In food, beverages and tobacco retail trade, turnover figures regressed by 1.7 percent in nominal terms (in real terms: -2.1 percent), in the non-food sector they showed a 1.5 percent decrease (in real terms: -1.4 percent).
